The story is old, but amusing: in November 2004, an American woman sold a grilled cheese sandwich for $28,000 on eBay. Absurd? Probably. But that’s not all: the sandwich was 10 years old. And it had the Virgin Mary on it – a face, a spirit, or whatever. That’s why it didn’t mold and wasn’t thrown away, as it was under God’s protection.

If you look closely, there really are outlines of a saint on it, but it’s like staring at a carpet. You can see Christ, the devil, or a swastika.

What’s interesting for us is this:

The buyer was the then-well-known online casino GoldenPalace. At the time it was riding high and spared no expense on outrageous PR campaigns.
A couple of years later, the guys shut down in the US and Canada, but somehow existed until either 2019 or 2023.
At the moment, goldenpalace(.)com is a flimsy review site. Flimsy in terms of traffic, of course: the history and backlinks are amazing.

Right now the domain can be bought for $100K via GoDaddy.

There are no visible Google penalties on the site.

Judging by the kind of junk some giant teams buy, $100K is a small price for a 28-year history and links from trusted sites. Or at least for an interesting experiment.
